At the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting held from June 30 to July 10, 2019 in Baku, Azerbaijan, ICCROM organized a side event followed by ICCROM-Medina exhibition of Historic Cities in the Arab Region.
The side event included an opening speech by Mr. Oliver Martin, ICCROM’s Chairperson of Council and Dr. Webber Ndoro, Director General of ICCROM and it also featured several aspects of ICCROM`s programmes and activities.
Dr. Zaki Aslan, Director of ICCROM-Sharjah presented the activities delivered by the Regional Office, and its on-going programmes including the MSc programme in Conservation Management and the Award programme.
The interventions of Dr. Fujio Ichihara and Dr. Rohit Jigyasu, Programme Officer at ICCROM and ICCROM-Sharjah respectively, highlighted the Disaster Risk Management programmes including its flagship programme on Heritage and Resilience.
The newly launched ICCROM-Medina initiative for institutional capacity building – aimed at improving and supporting management systems for effective conservation and management of historic cities in the Arab region – was then introduced by Mr. Abdallah Halawa, Project Associate at ICCROM-Sharjah.
To mark the launch of ICCROM-Medina initiative, the side event was followed by inaugurating an ICCROM-Medina exhibition which included 16 posters representing 14 historic cities in 13 member states from the Arab region, which are either on the World Heritage List or on the tentative list.
The posters provided brief information on history, significance, risks, as well as management systems of these historic cities.
The exhibition received support from partner universities and official heritage institutions in Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, and Yemen.
