Field school on the conservation of mosaics in-situ in Byblos, Lebanon

ICCROM-Sharjah, in partnership with the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) and the Directorate General of Antiquities (DGA) in Lebanon, is organizing a field school on the conservation of mosaics in-situ in Byblos, Lebanon.

The field school will be held from 26 March to 26 April 2019. The participants of the workshop are 12 mosaics conservation specialists coming from four countries (Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, and Palestine).

The training aims at improving skills in mosaics conservation in situ; documentation of mosaics pavements; study of mosaics art as an ancient architectural surface decoration; analysis of materials and construction techniques; deterioration phenomena and mechanisms; condition assessment and recording of in situ mosaics; study of mortars for the stabilization of in situ mosaic; planning, selection and execution of stabilization interventions; and preventive conservation through reburial.

The field school consists of theoretical lectures which will be held at the newly established DGA-ICCROM “Centre de Recherche et de Conservation du Patrimoine Libanais”, as well as on-site training at the archaeological site of Byblos. The training will be delivered by a group of international experts in the field and will include field visits to various sites in Lebanon.
