ICCROM-Sharjah announces projects nominated for the “Award of Cultural Heritage Conservation in the Arab Region”

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, the ICCROM’s Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah (ICCROM-Sharjah) had announced the Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in the Arab Region, 2017. This Biennial Award will honour and reward work that contributes to the protection and vitality of tangible cultural heritage in the Arab world.

A large number of outstanding projects from all the regions of the Arab world that aim to preserve and protect the cultural heritage in its various forms, have applied to the Award. Following the examination of the projects within the Award evaluation criteria, the following projects have been selected for the second phase:

  • Virtual 3D reconstruction of the Roman archaeological site in Tipaza, Algeria
  • Restoration and rehabilitation of Abdel Hamid Palace, Nablus, Palestine
  • Restoration of the historical centre in Beit Sahour, Palestine
  • Revival of the objects affected by explosion at the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo, Egypt
  • Renovation and reuse of Khan al-Wakala – Old City of Nablus, Palestine
  • Restoration and development of the National Theatre, Cairo, Egypt
  • Safeguarding the Mirhab of al-Umeyna Mosque, Oman
  • Research in the ruins of Dar Omar Basha, Damascus, Syria
  • Conservation and presentation of Qalaat Al-Chqif, Lebanon
  • Archiving, restoring and preserving historical documents, Jerusalem, Palestine
  • Preservation and peer nation of the Land of Civilizations, Mount Qarra, Saudi Arabia
  • Siq stabilization and mitigation of immediate hazards, Petra, Jordan
  • Rehabilitation of the historic center of Adh-Dhahiriya, Hebron, Palestine
  • Site management strategy, Shibam, Hadramout

Representatives of the nominated projects will be invited to discuss their work with an independent jury of Arab experts to select the winning project. The projects will be presented at the Award ceremony on the 6th of February 2018, where the winning project will be honoured.
