ICCROM – ATHAR Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah invites researchers to apply for the Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage to present their ongoing research on topics related to philosophical principles to conserve, and promote heritage places and historic artefacts in the Arab Region.

The Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage is a call for action and contribution to the understanding of shared past, with broad interest in different typologies of cultural properties. The forum will aim at:

  • Discussing how different elements impact the existing heritage systems in the region;
  • Devising a strategy for the future of conservation of heritage, rooted in the regional socio-cultural context;
  • Enhancing public awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage;
  • Proposing a vision on cultural heritage perception in the Arab Region.

The forum will be held in Sharjah from the 6th till the 8th of February 2018, and will include thematic sessions, discussions, and workshops. Accepted researchers will present their papers in a workshop during the forum. The papers will be published by ICCROM-ATHAR and its partners, with the conference proceedings. ICCROM-ATHAR will award scholarships to accepted researchers to cover their travel and accommodation expenses for the duration of the forum.

Those interested are requested to submit their passport copy with a passport photo, along with the filled out application form including an abstract that should not exceed 250-300 words.

Time frame:

  • Entry deadline for the 2018 Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage applications is on the (2nd of January, 2018).
  • Announcement of accepted abstracts on (7th January 2018)

The final paper should be submitted to ICCROM-ATHAR Center by 5th of February 2018.

Eligibility:

  • Only researchers affiliated with universities or research centers are eligible to participate in the Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage.

Guidelines:

  • The language of the paper is Arabic (Preferred), or English
  • The research paper should be the intellectual property of the applicant.
  • All information in the paper should be cited. All submitted material including pictures, tables, charts, etc. should be clear of any copyright issues that could prevent its reproduction.
  • The paper should be between 5000 to 7000 words.
  • Applications of papers written in partnership with other researchers should include a signed approval/consent from other parties giving the applicant full rights to share their intellectual property.
  • The research papers must address one of the following themes:
    • Cultural Heritage significance in the regional context;
    • Deliberate targeting of cultural heritage;
    • The role of media and education in forming a general understanding of cultural heritage;
    • Policies of cultural heritage conservation, current and future.

Selection Criteria:

  • Relevance of research topic to the forum themes;
  • Priority will be given to papers written in Arabic.
