Under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah, UAE (ICCROM-ATHAR) and the Sharjah Institute for Heritage recently completed the structural consolidation studies needed in order to consolidate and preserve the traditional wind tower of the Ibrahim Al Midfa house in the Heart of Sharjah, which was currently in a dangerous leaning state. This wind tower (Barjeel) is extremely unique from an architectural point of view due to its cylindrical design.

In order to provide the best international expertise for the development of structural consolidation studies compatible with the conservation of historical and heritage sites, the project has been carried out by ICRROM’s specialist Dr. Arch. Ayman Herzalla, associate at SPC s.r.l. established by Prof. Giorgio Croci, renown internationally in this field. Prof. Croci has worked on developing structural solutions to stabilize the leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), which suffers from a more severe angle of inclination, as well as other several landmark projects in Italy and the rest of the world.

The consolidation project of the wind tower of Al Midfa house also includes a sophisticated monitoring system has been installed to monitor the wind tower which is being followed and analyzed regularly by the specialists. Currently, the Sharjah Heritage Institute and the concerned authorities are coordinating within Sharjah to move to the stage of implementation of the consolidation work, which is expected to be completed soon in order to ensure the stability of the tower.
