Partners Meeting on “Improving Legislative Measures in the Arab States”

The ICCROM-ATHAR Regional Conservation Centre in Sharjah participated in a meeting held by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) on the 15th and 16th of November, 2014 in Manama, Bahrain, in cooperation with the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage in Manama, Bahrain (ARC-WH). The meeting discussed the preparation of Arab ethical and legal frameworks for the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage in the Arab world.

The meeting was heldon 15 November 2014, in the presence of Dr. Mounir Bouchenaki, Director of ARC-WH, Dr. Zaki Aslan, Director of ICCROM-ATHAR, and Dr. Hayet Guettat, Director of the Cultural Sector and the Heritage Protection Programme, ALECSO. Also attending the meeting was a number of specialists in the field of world heritage conservation laws.

In its first day, the meeting focused on issues related to challenges faced by cultural heritage in the region, as well as highlighting the risks of looting and destruction as a result of the political disorder in some Arab countries. The meeting also included presentations by experts on how international conventions, charters and recommendations relevant to cultural heritage conservation are implemented in the Arab states. Experts also proposed the best possible approaches to creating expert groups that will be responsible for drafting professional and legal tools for the protection of heritage and cultural properties in the Arab states.

The meeting was concluded with a number of recommendations to be presented at the next conference for the Ministers of Culture that will be held this upcoming January in Saudi Arabia. This is in order to envisage the team of professionals that will devise executive mechanisms for the protection and conservation of cultural heritage.
